If you鈥檙e thinking you鈥檇 like to be a volunteer this year, the Literacy Society would love to meet you at the Vernon Farmers Market Monday, Sept. 1.
The society is kicking off the new season with a Volunteer Drive in preparation for their fall programming.
Staff will be on-site recruiting at Kal Tire Place parking lot and also with free used books, treats for new and current volunteers, and a gift for new
applicants.
鈥淲e have volunteer opportunities in all of our programs this fall and now is a great time to sign up,鈥 said Wendy Aasen, outreach coordinator. 鈥淲e are also excited to offer an adult literacy program this year and will be seeking volunteer tutors to support adult learners.鈥
For those who love to read with children, there is the popular Reading Together program. Volunteers read one to one with elementary-aged children for an hour and a half per week.
鈥淚t鈥檚 the most meaningful work I do,鈥 of the volunteers in the program said.
Volunteers who don鈥檛 mind getting a little messy may enjoy the Skills Boost after-school program. This program provides small-group inquiry-based learning opportunities for school-aged children and hopes to expand to more school sites this year. Volunteers love watching the children get excited about learning.
For those who are comfortable with technology, enjoy serving in the Digital Literacy program. This popular program provides no cost workshops and one to one digital support for adults learning to use their digital devices. The learners are so appreciative of the help and the volunteers gain great satisfaction from seeing them leave with a smile on their face.
If you can鈥檛 make it to the market, prospective volunteers can apply online at .
Make this your year to volunteer!
