Environment and Climate Change Canada is advising of a severe thunderstorm hitting the Okanagan on Friday, Aug. 1, and possibly also Saturday, Aug. 2.

Update: 2:50 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been upgraded to a warning for the North and Central Okanagan.

Environment Canada announced the storm's increased severity in the regions around 2:30 p.m., saying meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong winds, up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.

The thunderstorm is 25 kilometres west of Oyama and 30 km northwest of 91大黄鸭 and is moving north at 20 km/h.

"Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail," the weather agency said.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or rain.

A severe thunderstorm is expected to pass through the Okanagan heading into the long weekend, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has advised.

The storm, rolling through the North, Central and South Okanagan starting Friday morning, Aug. 1, could yield strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain, ECCC says.

Such rainy weather can cause flash floods and limit visibility, making driving conditions potentially difficult.

Thunderstorm conditions are currently forecasted to carry into Saturday, Aug. 2, and ECCC cautions those in the regions to seek cover indoors if thunder rumbles.

"Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain," it explains.
