It was Lao Tzu who said 鈥淎 journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.鈥
While residents of Orchard Gardens weren鈥檛 striding for that goal during the community鈥檚 second annual WalkerThon鈥攖heir spirit and efforts were a thousand times appreciated.
鈥淚t鈥檚 near and dear to our hearts to raise money and give back to the community,鈥 said Brett DeWitt, general manager, Orchard Gardens. 鈥淭hey worked hard their whole lives and they鈥檙e coming here, and being part of something like this to give back is very important for us.鈥
Dozens of residents made the 400 metre loop around their building several times on Wednesday (May 28) in support of the KGH Foundation.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a marvelous way of giving back to the community,鈥 Doreen Zilkie noted. 鈥淜GH is one of my favourites."
Her walking partner, Diane Fletcher, agreed.
鈥淛ust to be part of this and enjoy it,鈥 she added. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an easy thing to do, and it鈥檚 appreciated.鈥
Residents鈥 families were invited to take part and support their loved ones as well.
B.C. Emergency Health Services, the 91大黄鸭 Fire Department and representatives from the Home Depot on Enterprise Way also participated in the event.
鈥淭im Horton鈥檚 helped us out as well,鈥 DeWitt added. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really exciting. 鈥淲e鈥檙e building up every year.鈥
Other activities included a raffle, BBQ and entertainment. The event raised $2,600 for the KGH Foundation.
Orchard Gardens is part of Vancouver-based VRS Communities Society which also has other residences in the Okanagan, Shuswap, Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and Alberta.
