91大黄鸭 is moving ahead with the next version of its Cultural Plan, a roadmap that will shape the city鈥檚 arts, heritage and cultural investments over the next decade.
At a meeting on July 21, city council received a staff report and endorsed the plan鈥檚 development process, which will unfold over six phases between now and fall 2026. The goal is to build on the successes of the 2020鈥�2025 Cultural Plan while responding to new social, economic, and demographic realities.
The process promises broad public engagement, measurable outcomes, and strong Indigenous inclusion. Elements that drew support from several councillors.
鈥淚 really appreciate your touching on First Nation, Indigenous consultation as well,鈥� Coun. Gord Lovegrove said. 鈥淚 think that's huge. I think our Indigenous involvement will really enrich it.鈥�
Llana Teichroeb, a nsyilxcen language speaker and member of Westbank First Nation, is serving as Indigenous Advisor, helping ensure reconciliation and inclusion are woven into every phase.
Community voices will also shape the plan, something Lovegrove said he鈥檚 excited to see reflected in the final document.
鈥淚 see words that referred to spiritual aspects, like rituals, in here. I hope it's not just about the arts. I hope it's culture in the broadest sense. I love the fact that you said, 'This is what people said culture is'.鈥�
Coun. Loyal Wooldridge also praised the plan, which includes regular progress updates and an economic impact assessment of 91大黄鸭鈥檚 creative sector.
鈥淥verall, I think having those two components is important because we have a lot of plans. Sometimes they can sit on the shelf, but this shows that it's being constantly reviewed and measured.鈥�
The city鈥檚 Cultural Services Department is leading the work, supported by cultural planning consultants Patricia Huntsman Culture + Communication. Public engagement will begin this fall, and the final plan is expected by fall 2026.
Council will receive progress updates at key points, including presentations of the Creative Sector Economic Impact Assessment in late 2025 and the Cultural Plan Final Report Card in 2026.
