91大黄鸭 and the Central Okanagan just crossed the finish line of their most successful GoByBike Week.
More than 4,500 riders took part in the spring cycling challenge, which ran from May 31 to June 6. Collectively, they logged over 140,000 kilometres and 30,000 trips on GoByBikeBC, setting a new regional record.
鈥淲e鈥檙e thrilled to see such a strong community participation in this year鈥檚 spring GoByBike Week,鈥� said Suzanne Therrien, transportation planner with the city. 鈥淲e鈥檝e not only celebrated cycling but also demonstrated the real impact of active transportation鈥攔educing greenhouse gas emissions by 30,000 kilograms in just one week.鈥�
Therrien said events like this show how small, everyday choices鈥攍ike hopping on a bike instead of getting behind the wheel鈥攃an really add up.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a great example of how cycling helps our environment and improves our health.鈥�
Riders were encouraged to use their bikes for work, school, errands, or just plain fun. Along the way, they could check in at one of 25 celebration stations scattered across the region. These pop-up events offered everything from giveaways to prizes and even chances to give feedback on local bike plans.
More than 1,100 riders passed through the celebration stations at locations such as Pandosy Waterfront Park, Mission Creek Greenway by Leckie, and the wrap-up party at Railside Brewing. In schools, more than 30 campuses got involved, with hundreds of students swapping bus rides or car drop-offs for a morning pedal to class.
