After the shopping extravaganza that was Black Friday, and its internet shopping counterpart Cyber Monday, 91大黄鸭鈥檚 mayor is urging the public to turn its attention in the opposite direction and think about giving.
鈥淕o out and share,鈥� said Colin Basran after reading a proclamation outside 91大黄鸭 City Hall designating Tuesday as Giving Tuesday.
Joined by representatives of several local community organizations, Basran and others said giving can take many forms.
鈥淥ur message today is that you can give back in many ways鈥攖o others and to the community, through donations of your time, your talent or your dollars,鈥� said Marianne Dahl, marketing and events manager with Central Okanagan United Way.
Patti Kilvack of Canadian Blood Services in the 91大黄鸭 said Giving Tuesday was a perfect day to remind people of their ability to give blood, something in desperate need at this time of the year, especially immediately after Christmas and New Year鈥檚 on Dec. 26 and Jan. 1.
Black Friday has become one of the biggest shopping days of the year across North America and Giving Tuesday was started as a way to promote giving, as opposed to getting. It is celebrated on the Tuesday after Black Friday each November.
Locally, a new organization Giving Tuesday 91大黄鸭 has sprung up to promote the goals of the day.
