Free lawn bowling lessons are coming to Penticton as leaders of a local club look to get more people engaged in a sport that was first introduced to Canadians in the 1880s.
The Penticton Lawn Bowling Club is hosting introductory sessions every Wednesday in June, from 6 to 8 p.m., and this weekend (June 7 and 8) from 1 to 3 p.m.
Bernadette Barry, membership secretary of the club, said she hopes free lessons will help introduce the sport to a younger demographic. The lessons are being offered as part of a grant from ParticipACTION, a national non-profit organization that promotes healthy living through sports.
People interested in trying the sport don't need to bring equipment, although they do need to wear flat shoes, Barry said.
The Penticton Lawn Bowling Club is located at 260 Brunswick St.
In May, as part of efforts to attract younger members, a group of club members held introductory lawn bowling programs at Penticton Secondary School.
"It was very successful," Barry said. "We're hoping this can generate some more interest with younger people."
The Penticton Lawn Bowling Club has around 60 members and participates in tournaments across B.C.
