Julia Alexander-Carew is on top of the university golf world in Canada.
At the Canadian University/College Championship held Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops, Alexander-Carew won the individual title by shooting a seven-under over four rounds (281). She secured the win by shooting a five-under 67 in the final round on Friday, June 6.
"It was a really good year for me and closing it out with this type of win is huge," said Alexander-Carew.
A year ago, she finished second at the national championship in Ontario.
"It was an unbelievable week caped off by an amazing final day performance," said Heat head coach Clay Stothers. "It was one of the greatest days I have had as a coach. I am so proud of Julia and believe this is just a start of something amazing for her and her career."
Because of her win and all-Canadian honours, Alexander-Carew will get a chance to compete at the 111th Canadian Women's Amateur Championship at he Riverside Country Club in Saint John, N.B. from July 22-25.
Alexander-Carew and her teammates Lauren Nedo, Emily Cornwall and Bess Chan as a team finished second at the championships for the second consecutive year, combining for a 15-over par 879 over the four rounds.
Nedo and Cornwall finished seventh and eighth individually while Chan was tied for 17th.
"I am very proud of the girls who are seeing first hand their hard work paying off," added Stothers. "We played so well this week and have come so far in a very short time as a program. The future is extremely bright."
For the women's team, its their fourth straight podium finish.
As for the men's five-man team, they survived the cut and finished the tournament in ninth with a 45-over 1,197.
Second year applied science major Ryan Gillis led the way for the team, finishing in a tie for 12th individually, shooting even (288). He week was highlighted by a hole-in-one in his final round.
The UBC Thunderbird teams won both the men's and women's team title.
