Vernon Christian School's Emerson Overend beat the old provincial record in the senior men's long jump at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships June 5-7 in Langley.
However...so did seven other athletes.
Overend placed seventh overall with a leap of 6.58 metres, which broke the old provincial record of 6.54 metres set in 2015 by Alex Salvage of Walnut Grove Secondary School in Langley.
The top-eight finishers in the event were all past the former B.C. standard, led by gold medallist Nathan Roth of Terry Fox Secondary School in Port Coquitlam, who set the new mark of 6.98m.
Tofin Jacob of Coldstream's Kalamalka Lakers was ninth at 6.41m, and Stefan Schuch from VCS just missed the top-10, placing 11th with a jump of 6.41m. All three North Okanagan athletes bested their qualifying marks.
Lanelle Sawatzky of VCS came the closest of any North Okanagan athlete to making the podium in Langley. She finished fourth in the junior women's high jump, going out at 1.55m. Amy Woods from Westsyde Secondary in Kamloops won bronze at 1.60m. Jaylah Dennis from Coquitlam's Centennial Secondary set a new B.C. record of 1.75m to take gold.
Tienne Wiebe of VCS placed fifth overall in the Grade 8 women's long jump with a leap of 4.92m. Chioma Uzozie from Vancouver's York House won gold with a new B.C. record of 5.35m.
Wiebe also made the final of the Grade 8 women's 80m hurdles, placing sixth in 13.67 seconds. She was fifth in qualifying.
Mio Pelletier of Kal Secondary qualified for the Grade 8 men's 800m race with the eighth and final spot, then finished fifth in the final with a time of two minutes 12.65 seconds. Oliver Van Nostrand of Shuswap Middle School in Salmon Arm won bronze in 2:12.10.
Kaelan Zacharias of A.L. Fortune was sixth in the final of the senior men's 110m hurdles in a time of 15.69 seconds. Wiliam Flett of St. Andrew's Regional High School in Victoria took bronze at 15:26. Zacharias grabbed one of the eight spots in the final with a 15.57 run in the preliminaries.
Jacob Leyenhorst of VCS was 17th overall in 17.13 seconds.
Leyenhorst missed qualifying for the final of the senior men's 400m hurdles by only seven/one-hundredths of a second. He was ninth overall in 59.79 seconds.
Jonah Warawa from Vernon Christian finished sixth in the senior men's hammer throw with a toss of 38.49m.
Kaitlyn Anderson of Vernon's W.L. Seaton Secondary Sonics missed the final of the senior women's 200m dash by one spot, placing ninth overall in 25.91 seconds.
The Royals' Grade 8 women's 4x100m relay squad of Brynn Zuidhof, Gillian Rands, Amelia Bongalis, and Wiebe was 10th overall in 54.67 secs.
The Vernon Secondary School Panthers' senior men's 4x100m relay team of Jonah Lee, Ayden McDonald, Coby Therrien and Anderson Bicknell was 12th overall in 44.38 secs; Vernon Christian's quartet of Stefan Schuch, Overend, Nic Demiris, and Leyenhorst was 14th, finishing in 44.52 secs;
In the junior men's high jump, Kosis Linke of Kal cracked the top-15, placing 13th with a leap of 1.75m. Kingston Soper from Enderby's A.L. Fortune Falcons was 25th (1.55m).
Brody Cormier from A.L.Fortune was 11th in the senior men's 2,000m steeplechase in a time of 6 minutes 36.94 seconds.
Rebecca Sawatzky, in the senior women's high jump, placed 13th, clearing the bar at 1.45m;
Leah Funk of VCS placed 15th in the senior women's 400m hurdels in 1:14.98.
