Boaters and water skiers raise serious safety concerns in Vernon

Recent activity puts workers in the area at risk

Water skiers on Okanagan Lake are urged to steer clear of a Vernon area after workers were put at risk recently.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is issuing a public safety notice regarding the Canoe Bay Pump Station Project, which is currently underway along the north side of Okanagan Lake.

"Recent activity from recreational water skiers near the construction zone has raised serious safety concerns," the RDNO said Aug. 7. "Divers are working in the area to complete instream environmental and infrastructure tasks. The proximity of watercraft to divers poses a significant risk to both workers and lake users."

To ensure public safety, the RDNO reminds all boaters and water skiers to strictly avoid the designated construction zone near Canoe Bay, which is at the north end of Kin Beach.

A 150-metre buffer zone has been established around the work area and is marked by buoys and signage. This area is a no-go and no-wake zone; all lake users are asked to respect these boundaries.

Key safety measures in place include:

  • Buoys and signage mark the restricted area.
  • Beach signage advising swimmers not to pass the buoys.
  • Lighting on lake piles to alert nighttime boaters.
  • Notices posted at Paddlewheel boat launch to inform boaters of ongoing construction.

The Canoe Bay Pump Station Project is a vital infrastructure initiative supporting sustainable agriculture in Greater Vernon. The instream work is carefully timed to align with environmental windows.

Residents are also advised that starting Thursday, Aug. 8 at 5 p.m., Tronson Road will reopen to traffic for the afternoon commute.

Beginning Friday, Aug. 9, the intersection of Lakeridge Drive and Bella Vista Road (west, lower intersection) will close as construction continues.

"For the safety of crews and residents, please follow all construction signage and detour instructions and adhere to speed limits," the RDNO said.

"The RDNO and City of Vernon appreciate the public鈥檚 cooperation in keeping the lake and roads safe for everyone."
