Here's what fires have burned near Revelstoke, Golden, Nakusp this summer

See a recap of 11 wildfires that have sparked in the region since summer started — from tennis-court size, to bigger than Revelstoke's greenbelt

Wildfire season is seeing a lull in B.C.'s Southeast Fire Centre, but fire crews have had a busy summer in the Columbia-Shuswap and Arrow Lakes regions.

Here are recaps of 11 particular fires that popped up across the Revelstoke, Golden and Nakusp areas in July and so far this August, according to BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

Kinbasket Lake

The largest wildfire in the area, about 40 kilometres north of Mica Creek at Kinbasket Lake, was identified by BCWS on July 2 and scorched a total 158.5 hectares. It's burned for more than a month, but been contained and continued to be held by Prince George Fire Centre crews for several weeks.

Trout Lake

A batch of three lightning-caused fires sparked near the community of Trout Lake and Highway 31 on July 2. After a week, they'd burned more than two hectares but were all either doused or under control by BCWS crews.

Shelter Bay

A spot fire BCWS suspected as human-caused broke out about five kilometres north of Shelter Bay on July 9, and was under control within several hours.

Martha Creek

A lightning-caused fire occurred about 10 kilometres north of Revelstoke off Highway 23, near Martha Creek Provincial Park, on July 16. Several BCWS firefighters responded and had doused the burn by July 17.

MacLeod Creek

A spot fire reported atop Kuskanax Mountain north of Nakusp on July 30 quickly developed into a 120-hectare blaze, forming a large smoke cloud visible from the village. As many as 40 BCWS firefighters responded at once with helicopter and heavy vehicle support.

The Village of Nakusp and Regional District of Central Kootenay reassured residents there was no threat to infrastructure. Turner Road up Mount Abriel was partially closed as BCWS used it for access, but it has since fully reopened and the fire has been held for several days as crews continue to put the damper on it.

Glacier National Park

A lightning-caused fire was reported below Ross Peak in Glacier National Park on Aug. 1 and visible from the Trans-Canada Highway. It remained smaller than 0.1 hectares over the next seven days and Parks Canada reported low fire danger and no threat to public safety or infrastructure.

Glacier National Park No. 2

A second small fire in the park was reported by BCWS in early August, farther northeast near Stoney Creek Bridge. It was doused within a day or two.

Town of Golden

A 0.03-hectare burn scorched a patch of vegetation and second-growth forest in the Town of Golden's north end on Aug. 1. Several BCWS firefighters quickly arrived on scene and had controlled and doused the fire later that day.

Mount Begbie

A fire broke out on the slopes of Revelstoke's Mount Begbie on Aug. 4, growing to 0.1 hectares as BCWS struggled to access it. It was held after three days, and has remained under control for more than two weeks.

Downie Arm

Also around Aug. 4, another spot fire popped up about 70 kilometres north of Revelstoke, around Downie Arm. It was extinguished after more than a week.

Turnbull Creek

As well, a lightning-sparked fire had broken out near Turnbull Creek, across Upper Arrow Lake from Nakusp, by Aug. 4. It had already burned 15 hectares by Aug. 5, and by the time BCWS crews were holding the blaze Aug. 12, it had scorched 24.2 hectares — more land than Revelstoke's Illecillewaet Greenbelt.

The fire continues to remain under control, following a response from dozens of firefighters with helicopter support.

Boulder Mountain

Lightning sparked a fire on Revelstoke's Boulder Mountain that was identified Wednesday, Aug. 13. It grew to 0.1 hectares and was under control by Thursday, Aug. 14, with Revelstoke Fire Chief Steven DeRousie reassuring the public the fire presented no threat.
