A hand grenade found at a residential building in Vernon turned out to be inert July 31.

The Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) was called to town last week after a hand grenade was found.

A member of the public found it at a residential building in the 3300 block of 35th Avenue July 31 around 1:15 p.m., according to Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.

The residence was secured until EDU officers attended later that evening and safely dealt with the item, which was later determined to be completely inert.

Police are continuing to investigate.

"In this case it turned out to be inert and not explosive, but this is a good example of the serious issues and disruptions replica explosives, firearms, or other weapons, can cause," said Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer.

"Our response will always be to treat it as real until it can be proven otherwise. If you come across one of these, never assume it鈥檚 safe to handle. Leave it in place and call police immediately so we can come and safely deal with it."
