Now with a new lid, Lumby's Pat Duke Memorial Arena is ready to better serve the community.
A roof replacement and other building upgrades have been completed at the rink, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) announced Tuesday, July 29.
The arena has been a cornerstone of the community since 1967, and the improvements will help maintain the structure as a safe and welcoming space for future generations.
The upgrades address critical structural needs while enhancing the overall experience for users, from minor hockey teams and figure skaters to recreational skaters and community event organizers.
The RDNO says the new roof and building improvements will significantly extend the facility's lifespan while reducing maintenance costs and improving energy efficiency. There will be fewer program disruptions, a more comfortable environment for athletes and spectators and better support for community events.
鈥淭he Pat Duke Memorial Arena is more than just a rink 鈥� it鈥檚 a gathering place, a training ground, and a hub of community life,鈥� said Rick Fairbairn, chair of the RDNO White Valley Parks, Recreation, and Culture Committee. 鈥淭hese upgrades ensure that it remains a vibrant and accessible space for all residents, now and into the future.鈥�
The project was made possible through the following funding sources:
鈥� $800,000 from the Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF), which provides stable, long-term funding for local infrastructure projects across Canada.
鈥� $750,000 from the BC鈥檚 Growing Communities Fund, supporting infrastructure that meets the needs of growing populations.
鈥� Additional funding from RDNO reserves ensured the project鈥檚 completion without compromising other community services.

The RDNO has partnered with the Lumby Men's Shed to design and construct a new handcrafted wooden sign for the arena, which will symbolize local pride and volunteerism.
