The City of Penticton is warning the public about fawning season.

Penticton city officials took to social media on Friday (June 13) to share they've heard reports of aggressive deer "throughout the community."

The city's post came as it warned the public, especially pet owners, about fawning season.

Baby deer are born from mid-May to June and does "may become aggressive if you get too close to their newborns during this time," the warning reads.

"Does may see pets as predators or threats as they resemble natural predators of fawns in the wild. If a dog comes too close, the doe may become aggressive and charge at the dog."

If a deer approaches you or your pet, WildsafeBC says to avoid eye contact, speak softly and back away slowly.

"If you are concerned for your safety or have sighted deer in your neighbourhood that are no longer afraid of people or pets please report them to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277," the city added in its warning.
