Summerland breaks heat record for July 8

Sun-Oka Beach Provincial Park and other beaches were places to cool down during a record-breaking hot day on Tuesday, July 8.

It was a warm day in Summerland on Tuesday, July 8.

According to data from Environment Canada, the South Okanagan community broke a heat record for the day.

The preliminary new record of 37 C was considerably warmer than the old record for the day of 35.7 C, set in 2015. Records have been kept since 1907.

The normal high temperature for this time of year in Summerland is 26 and the normal low is 12.

While 37.0 is warm, the community has been even warmer.

On June 30, 2021, Summerland recorded a high of 44.7, the hottest temperature ever recorded in the community. 

On that same day, Lytton, B.C. reached a high of 49.6, the hottest temperature ever recorded anywhere in Canada. The previous high temperature for Canada was 45.0, set in 1937 in Midale and Yellow Grass, Sask.

Summerland has also experienced some cold temperatures. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the community was -30.0, set on Jan. 25, 1950.

Environment Canada forecasts for the coming days call for a high of 26 C with a 40 per cent chance of showers on July 9. After that, the forecast calls for sunny conditions and high temperatures in the low 30s.
