Summerland to showcase solar energy's South Okanagan future

The municipality of Summerland will hold a free public event about the future of solar energy in the South Okanagan.

The municipality of Summerland will present Green Drinks: Bright Ideas in Solar, a free public event about the future of solar energy in the South Okanagan.

The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Okanagan College Penticton Campus.

The event will include the District of Summerland, Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, City of Penticton, Green Drinks Penticton, BC Beverage Technology Access Centre and Okanagan College, along with local experts, innovators and community leaders.

鈥淩enewable energy is not just a priority for our council 鈥 it鈥檚 a commitment to our community鈥檚 future,鈥 said Summerland mayor Doug Holmes. 鈥淓vents like Green Drinks: Bright Ideas in Solar allow us to share knowledge, celebrate innovation, and inspire sustainable solutions that benefit the South Okanagan for generations to come.鈥

The event will include a presentation of the Summerland Energy Centre, a flagship project for local clean energy.

Included in the event will be the City of Penticton鈥檚 new metering and electrical service payment plan, agrovoltaics - the practice of combining solar energy installations with agricultural activities for dual land use, trends and opportunities in residential solar energy and net metering systems, presentations on the solar trades program and sustainable building technology program at Okanagan College and a tour of Okanagan College鈥檚 solar panels and buildings.

Those attending will be able to ask questions, network and see applications of solar technology.
