Revelstoke runner breaks school's 2017 record at track provincials

Revelstoke Secondary School's Maya Royle scored silver in senior girls' 3,000 metres, finishing 17 seconds ahead of fastest time RSS set eight years prior

Runners, throwers, jumpers and vaulters from Revelstoke Secondary School (RSS) delivered standout performances at the 2025 BC High School Track & Field Championships in Langley, punctuated by one athlete's record-breaking race for her school.

Alongside 10 fellow Revelstoke athletes competing June 5 to 7, Maya Royle took the podium with a silver medal in the senior girls’ 3,000 metres.

Royle surged ahead of a competitive pack of 10 runners, with under a kilometre remaining in the three-kilometre grind. She held off challengers to land a time of 10:18:35, in a gutsy effort that shattered RSS's 2017 record for the event by 17 seconds.

As well, Royle placed seventh overall in the 1,500 metres, running a personal best of 4:43:94 to once again set her school's record — this time by seven seconds.

In the throws, there was heartbreak in the hammer for both Aiden Arnold and Reece Cochrane, who narrowly missed finals. However, both senior athletes bounced back with strong consolation performances. Arnold delivered a season’s best in discus with a 31.36-metre toss, while Cochrane achieved the same in shot put following a 7.91-metre hurl.

Junior athletes also made their mark. Blake Booth cleared 2.8 metres in the pole vault to place sixth, while Ember Smith posted personal bests in both the 3,000 metres (11:03:26) and 1,500-metre steeplechase (5:29:24), earning eighth place in both events.

The championship further marked the final high school appearances for seniors Ilaria Widmer and Rachel Grabinsky. Widmer capped her RSS career with a personal best of 1:03:33 in the 400 metres, placing 24th, while Grabinsky ran a season's best of 18.85 in the 100m hurdles, also finishing 24th.

Additionally, Vera Tanner achieved 1:17:96 in the 400-metre hurdle preliminaries, Kasey Howe sailed 18.93 metres in discus finals, Scarlet Henshall threw 8.33 metres in shot put final and 19.63 metres in javelin finals, and Micah Grady pranced through the 200-metre hurdle finals in 31:98.

Revelstoke’s athletes showcased resilience, progress and school pride throughout the championships, setting new records and earning valuable experience on the provincial stage.
