Vernon rowers Lap the Lake to medals

Athletes from the Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club competed admirably in the largest ever Regatta hosted at Swan Lake.

At their home Regatta, Vernon rowers blew through the water to new best times at Swan Lake.

The annual Lap The Lake Regatta in 2025 was its largest ever, with 41 boats and 78 athletes taking part on Saturday, June 14.

Crews from B.C. and the United States raced a triangular, 3,600-meter course, as finish times were adjusted for boat type, crew genders, and ages to determine the overall winner.

The inaugural Founders' Cup was given out to Vernon alumni siblings Elena Masyte and Jonas Masys. Their mixed double boat finished with an adjusted time of 12:27.64. Jonas currently rows at Brock University, while Elena competes for the University of Victoria.

On their home course, athletes from the Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club (VRDBC) performed well. Fastest class finishes were recorded by the adaptive men's double of Kobe Funk and Riley Brinnen, men's single Cole O'Connor, men's double of Leo Middelkamp and Peter Masys and the women's double of Sierra Munroe and Aida Mills.

After the event, the Rowing B.C. director of performance and Olympic Gold medalist Terry Paul organized a hands-on boat rigging workshop, and on Sunday, crews had a chance to participate in the Rowing B.C. U23 and masters development camp.
