Vernon bank branch celebrates 50 years alongside mall

RBC Village Green Centre salutes a half-century in Vernon with cake, old photos, and a pair of charitable donations

One of Vernon's Village Green Centre's original tenants celebrated 50 years in business on the anniversary the day the mall opened.

RBC's Village Green branch (originally known as the Royal Bank) opened along with the mall at 10 a.m. on Aug. 6, 1975. A half-century later, the branch threw a party on the same date, and made some substantial donations.

"We had cake and RBC swag to give out to clients," said Mairin Reading, the branch's assistant manager. "We had visits from retirees, and we shared photos of how the branch has looked throughout the years."

The highlight of the day, said Reading, was when the branch was able to make $5,000 donations to two local charities – North Okanagan Friendship Centre and Salvation Army Food Bank. Reps from both groups were on hand to collect cheques from RBC.

As part of the mall's 50th anniversary, an outdoor movie night is taking place Friday, Aug. 15 in front of Sport Chek. Admission is by donation of a non-perishable item to the food bank. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets between 7:30 and 8:15 p.m. Movie night is weather dependant.
