The Penticton Vees' 64-year run in the BCHL has come to an end.
Jack Good broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period and Zach Zahara made 24 saves as the Brooks Bandits toppled the visiting Penticton Vees 3-1 in Game 6 of the Interior Conference Finals on May 12.
Brooks, which won the best-of-seven series 4-2, eliminated Penticton and advanced to the Fred Page Cup finals.
Penticton was unable to force a Game 7, making Monday its final BCHL game as the team prepares to join the Western Hockey League for the 2025-26 season.
Caton Ryan scored for the Vees 13 seconds into the second period to make it 1-1. Goaltender Ethan Buenaventura was stellar for Penticton, stopping 33 shots in what turned out to be his final junior hockey game.
Keith McInnis and Parker Lalonde also scored for Brooks, which will play the Chilliwack Chiefs in the Fred Page Cup finals. It will mark the Alberta-based club's first appearance in the BCHL championship series after it joined the league ahead of this season.
Lalonde's goal, his 13th of the postseason which came at 19:01 of the third period, was an empty-net marker that gave Brooks a 3-1 lead. It came after Good scored at 6:54 of the frame to break the deadlock.
The Vees' run in the BCHL started in 1961. The franchise, which won a record 13 championships, has also been known as the Knights, Panthers and Broncos.
Penticton's WHL franchise will be known as the Vees when it begins play this September.
"The Vees would like to thank the BCHL for the last 64 years and they thank the league for decades of unforgettable rivalries, championships, and memories that shaped generations of players and fans," the team said in a statement following Monday's loss.
"Lastly, to our dedicated fans, sponsors, and volunteers, thank you. We appreciate your unwavering support, and we look forward to starting this new era of Vees hockey with you."
